Mississippi’s Hiram Revels becomes 1st black senator. J.H. Rainey, along with 4 others, join House of Representatives.

15th Amendment ensures right to vote, regardless of race, color or previous condition of servitude.

Ku Klux Klan Act is passed granting federal jurisdiction over terrorist activity and allows the President the ability to declare martial law. It expires a year later.

The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs was founded with 8 teams.

Charlotte Ray is the first black woman to complete the program at Harvard Law School.
