He began playing in the City League of Birmingham, Alabama, as a teenager in 1938 and continued during the 1940s, prior to joining the Birmingham Black Barons in 1949. His career with the Black Barons was brief and was during the years when the Negro Leagues had begun to decline.

Baseball Career Highlights:
"My greatest highlight was looking back and remembering that I played with some of the greatest ball players in the world: Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Piper Davis, Buck O'Neil, Luke Easter, "Cool Papa" Bell and my best friend, Minnie Minoso. Also, my other career highlight was hitting .370 or better with the Birmingham Black Barons during my last year in the Leagues."

Professional/Personal Accomplishments:

"After earning a college degree from Alabama A&M College, I worked at Immaculate High School, West End High and Avondale Elementary School. I also coached baseball, football and basketball for 38 years and had some of the best teams in the state. I feel that coaching kids is about the best thing a man can do."
